Prof Cheney Joseph, Jr

NAFUSA member Cheney Joseph Jr., 73, died on December 18, 2015. Professor Joseph was the interim co-dean of the Louisiana State University Law School. He served as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana, 1976-1977.

He also served as Administrative Assistant, District Attorney’s office, East Baton Rouge Parish (until 1972); Assistant Professor, LSU Law Center, 1972 – 1975, Associate Professor, LSU Law Center, 1976 – 1980, Professor of Law and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, 1981 – 1989; First Assistant District Attorney and District Attorney, East Baton Rouge Parish, 1989 – 1990; Judge Pro- Tempore, 16th Judicial District Court 1992; Judge Pro-Tempore, 40th Judicial District Court, 1993; Executive Counsel to the Governor of Louisiana, 1996 – 2000; Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, LSU Law Center, 2000 – present.

Rudy Giuliani to Join Greenberg Traurig

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has announced he will join global law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, as Global Chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Crisis Management Practice and Senior Advisor to firm Executive Chairman Richard A. Rosenbaum. Giuliani, a lifetime member of NAFUSA, is the fourth former United States Attorney to join Greenberg, joining John Pappalardo, Sam Skinner and Troy Eid. Giuliani will be joining from Bracewell & Giuliani, a Texas firm whose New York City office was established by the Mayor in 2005. NAFUSA 2016 Dues Payable By February 29

2016 dues were payable by February 29, 2016. Email invoices were sent in early January to all non-life members. Thanks to the generousity of our sponsors, the dues structure has remained at the same low level for years. Regular dues are $150 and senior dues (70 years of age and over and fully retired from the practice of law) $50. You might consider joining the 64 lifetime members (full listing on the link at nafusa.org) at $1500. You may send a check for your dues or pay by credit card. Please note that if you are paying by credit card, we use a third party vendor named WePay. Your credit card statement should show WPY*NAFUSA, but there have been some instances where NAFUSA’s name has been left off the statement. We are working to fix the recording error, but the dues are being deposited in NAFUSA’s account. Checks for dues should be payable to NAFUSA and mailed to NAFUSA, PO Box 1524, Brighton, Michigan 48116. Please complete the registration form even if you are mailing a check.

Support Grows For Criminal Justice Reform

As the Senate Judiciary Committee holds a major hearing today on criminal justice reform, the Law Enforcement Leaders To Reduce Crime & Incarceration delivered a letter to the leaders of Congress supporting the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015 (S.2123).

The letter, signed by over 70 prominent police chiefs and federal prosecutors, urges Congress to act on the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015, which would reduce prison populations by reforming federal mandatory minimum sentences. 26 NAFUSA members Zachary Carter, Tristram Coffin, Paul Coggins, Richard Deane, Donald DeGabrielle, Edward Dowd, Robert Fiske, Hal Hardin, Walter Holton, Brendan Johnson, Todd Jones, Douglas Jones, Ronald Machen, Salvatore Maxrtoche, Matthew Orwig, Brad Pigott, Richard Pocker, Timothy Pardon, Richard Rossman, Donald Stern, Richard Thornburgh, Brett Tolman, Gregory Vega, Edward Warin, Donald Washington and William Wilmoth were among the signers.

Vince Cohen Joins Dechert and NAFUSA

Dechert LLP announced that Vincent H. Cohen, Jr. has joined the firm in its Washington office as a partner in the litigation group. Cohen most recently served as the acting United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, and is NAFUSA’s newest member.

Bill Killian Joins NAFUSA and Polsinelli

December 5, 2015 was the last day in office for William C. Killian, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. On December 7, 2015, he joined Polsinelli as a shareholder in its Chattanooga office. Killian is also NAFUSA’s newest member.

“Polsinelli is a great fit for me, with a reputation in litigation and serving the evolving health care industry,” Killian said. “Joining the firm allows me to have a platform to focus on critical health care and fraud issues, and I look forward to working with Polsinelli’s highly recognized team of attorneys.”

Dan Webb To Review Chicago’s Law Department

The Chicago Tribune reported today that NAFUSA member Dan Webb has been retained by the Chicago Law Department to examine how the department handles police shootings and defends the city against claims of excessive force.

Webb’s agreement with the city allows him to not only make suggestions for improving policies and procedures but also to refer cases of possible misconduct to the city inspector. Webb told the Tribune: “I can go in and they have to provide me with any and all information…to kind of tear apart their practices and procedures.” Continue reading →
